Graduate Programs

If you are interested in becoming a graduate student at the Institute for Systems Biology (Institute), there are many options available. While the Institute does not take graduate students directly, we do accept graduate students through the program affiliations of our faculty members.

    Molecular and Cellular Biology Program
The University of Washington's Molecular and Cellular Biology graduate program (MCB) is an interdisciplinary PhD program. There are several Institute faculty members who accept graduate students through this program. MCB integrates many areas of research, including structural, molecular, cellular, developmental and systems biology. For more information, please visit the MCB website or contact one of the Institute's affiliated faculty members directly.

    Biomolecular Structure and Design Program
The University of Washington's Biomolecular Structure and Design graduate program (BMSD) is an interdisciplinary program leading to a Ph.D. in the department of the faculty advisor of the student. Faculty members have a variety of home departments at the University of Washington. Students in the program study the use and determination of atomic-level structures of biologically important molecules, with the goal of understanding the relationship between structure and function, predicting three-dimensional structures of biomolecules, and designing new molecules. For more information, please visit the BMSD website or contact one of the Institute's affiliated faculty members directly.

    University of British Columbia
Some Institute faculty members are affiliated with the University of British Columbia, Canada (UBC) and UBC graduate students may pursue their Ph.D. at the Institute. Please contact one of the Institute's affiliated faculty members directly.

    University of Alberta
Some Institute faculty members are affiliated with the University of Alberta, Canada (UA) and UA graduate students may pursue their Ph.D. at the Institute. Please contact one of the Institute's affiliated faculty members directly.

    Other Options
Many of the Institute's faculty have affiliations with other University of Washington departments. Students who are accepted into those graduate programs may pursue graduate research under the guidance of an Institute faculty member. Please directly contact faculty members with whom you are interested in pursuing graduate research.

Postdoctoral Fellows

Postdoctoral Fellows are welcomed in all laboratories at the Institute as positions are available. Many Postdoctoral Fellow opportunities are advertised on the Institute's career page. However, please feel free to directly contact faculty members with whom you would like to work. The Institute is committed to providing quality healthcare benefits to all postdoctoral fellows.

Undergraduate Opportunities

The Institute is seeking highly motivated undergraduates for internships through the NIGMS funded Center for Systems Biology. This is a great opportunity for undergraduates to gain mentored research and educational experience in a laboratory. Please visit the Institute´s career page for a listing of current openings and to apply online.

Venture Capital Fellowship

With our partners at Accelerator Corp., the ISB offers a training opportunity through our Venture Capital Fellowship. The goal of the Fellowship is to prepare Fellows for leadership positions at the interface of systems biology and entrepreneurial biotechnology. Fellows work part-time at Accelerator. Accelerator's mission is to build the next generation of life-enhancing biotechnology companies by providing the resources critical to accelerating the development of nascent leading-edge biotechnologies www.acceleratorcorp.com. The objectives of the Fellowship Program are to:
  • Provide Fellows with direct professional experience working at Accelerator on collaborative projects involving technical and intellectual property due diligence and investment decisions on prospective companies; collaborating on the start-up of a company; and, working with existing Accelerator companies on specific scientific, technical, and business development problems.
  • Train Fellows to evaluate prospective ventures from business and scientific perspectives; to contribute to the development of biotechnology ventures; and to think strategically about the interface of venture capital and systems biology.
  • And thereby, prepare Fellows for leadership positions at the interface of systems biology and entrepreneurial biotechnology.
Venture Capital Fellows will be appointed for one year during which they will work 10% of their time (funded by the Fellowship Program) at Accelerator. They will also attend lectures and present their work at the ISB retreat.
