Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry
As a private, non-profit research institute, the ISB is positioned midway between academia and industry, leveraging the strengths and advantages of both. It is established as an organization without departments, which has enabled broad integration of cross-disciplinary science and training; team approaches; and the ability to both pioneer new technologies and take on the challenging, long-term fundamental problems in biology.
Because the ISB plans to remain relatively small to facilitate internal collaboration and agility, it has established partnerships with private companies, universities and other institutions. These partnerships serve as a critical component to the ISB's mission as an integrating force in biology, and will continue to be of the utmost importance in developing and applying systems biology tools.
Collaborations with academia serve as a cornerstone of the cutting edge research at the ISB, leveraging a wide array of expertise at numerous institutions simultaneously and providing the opportunity for global analysis of scientific problems. The ISB´s relationships with industry demonstrate how non-profit and for-profit research collaborations can work toward the common goal of rapidly developing and disseminating new methods and technologies that are needed not just for making scientific breakthroughs, but for actually applying them in ways that have global impact in predicting and preventing diseases.
