Why does ISB welcome philanthropy?
The fit between donors such as you and ISB scientists is natural. The systems approaches of our researchers to biomedical inquiry and the advance of P4 Medicine are pioneering, even revolutionary, and philanthropy often catalyzes profound change in science and the integration of scientific discoveries with society.
Don't federal grants provide generously for scientific research?
No, they do not. The reasons for this include:
- Grant budgets are structured not to cover all costs of the research they fund.
- Federal funding has been stagnant for several years.
- Federal agencies cover only a modest share of the expensive costs of equipment and research infrastructure.
- Federal grants predominantly support the work of older scientists. Support for young researchers is very limited: the average age of first time grant recipients is 43. ISB is a tremendously creative and productive organization, and the average age of our scientists is 38.
- The federal granting culture is conservative, supporting research that is indeed worthy, but "safe" and generally not cutting edge. ISB is cutting edge.
Can my gift make a difference?
Yes. Look at ISB today. It was established eight years ago through the vision and personal resources of its founders. They were joined by a number of individuals and institutions who recognized the vision and promise of the Institute with their philanthropy. Today, ISB has an operating budget of $55 million, supports strategic partnerships around the world, continues to be the source of extraordinary discoveries and technological development, and stands at the forefront of personal, predictive, preventive, and participatory medicine. ISB dramatically exemplifies just how great a difference your gift can make.
