Institute for Systems Biology Network
Date: September 23, 2010
Time: 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Location: Town Hall Seattle
Description: The Institute for Systems Biology and the Technology Alliance co-present a Town Hall event focused on the state of K-12 STEM education in Washington. Join us for a thought-provoking panel discussion on what is making a difference for students and teachers of STEM, and how members of the business and research communities can be effective advocates and partners in improving STEM education in our schools.

Excellence in K-12 STEM education is critical to our future: to inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers; to producing the technologically proficient workforce that will build new products, services and industries; and to providing our children with the knowledge that enables them to be informed, engaged citizens and active participants in an economy increasingly driven by innovation.

Ilya Shmulevich, PhD
Date: November 3, 2010
Time: 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Location: Institute for Systems Biology
Description: As mapping an individual's genome becomes less expensive (in 2008 the cost was approximately $100,000 - today it's under $10,000), more and more of us will have our genomes mapped in the coming years. But what will we do with the billions of data points per person, this process will generate? The information derived from the mapping of our genomes is only valuable if we can efficiently manage the data. Join Dr. Ilya Shmulevich, leader of the Institute's computational biology efforts, for a discussion of the challenges and opportunities that await us as we forge ahead to the next steps of human genome sequencing. This event is $20 per person which includes appetizers and beverages. For more information visit, Dr. Shmulevich's webpage.
